The Nature of Power Essay - 3751 Words

The Nature of Power In 1948, the OECD was formed by several European nations in what would become the first step toward the formation of the European Union. The creation of the EU was revolutionary in that nations gave up unprecedented amounts of their sovereignty, resulting in such acts as voluntarily subjecting themselves to monitoring of war materials (coal and steel) and culminating in the institution of the Euro and integration of European economies and societies, and politics. The success of the EU in the last few years is amazing not just because of its economic achievements, but because it signifies the first successful surrender of nationalism and the transfer of loyalty to a regional level, notions which would have been†¦show more content†¦To that end, this essay will explore the fundamental nature and show the undercurrents of power struggle that are overlooked as part of the everyday and equate them with more prominent struggles of the same type. Power manifests itself in a variety of ways. The one most often perceived is the power of brute force, embodied in political and military leaders and disseminated in movies life XXX, TV series like West Wing and JAG, and bullies on the playground. There is power of the network, embodied in unions and other civil movements, and perceived through Thomas Gordon books, human interest news stories, as well as gangs and school yard cliques. There is also power of influence, achieved by orators, demagogues, community leaders and intellectuals, and power of guilt, exploited mainly by religious institutions. The latter two powers perceived less and talked about by few (usually by those who have or seek to have the power of influence), but are also more prevalent in everyday life. This essay will cover all forms of power in how they manifest and are perceived in everyday life. In doing so, it will also try to distill power to its true essence and determine why it is so much a part of the human psyche. Guilt is probably the most underestimated forces of power. Guilt is often referred to in everyday life in terms of religion and relationships (as in the familial guilt-trip) but it has more power than it is given credit for. Specialized Help on Logistics Management

INTRODUCTION The logistics management is an act of managing the supply chain which involves the transfer of goods as well as services from the point of origin to the point of destination in order to meet the aspirations of customers through a holistic act of planning the strategic moves in order to control the movement. In todays world, where the interdependencies of one person over another, one country over another has been increasing by leaps and bounds, this branch of science is an aspiring field to oversee delivery of supply and goods over a long range of distance. The logistics support is a vital branch of our armed forces, the supply of ammunition goods over to the borders as well as to the soldiers fighting off-shore defines the margin of winning defeat, a force having a healthy logistics supply is a hard nut to crack. Logistics management term was first introduced to highlight the military efforts in world wars. The studies have defined Logistics as the process by which the factors like procuring, movement, storing, and inventories whether finished or otherwise are managed in such a way so that the organizational profits are maximized and the competitiveness of the organization is improved. The role of the logistics system is the satisfaction of the customers. Other studies mentioned that logistics can impact the delivery time of the product to the customer. It is essential that the customer receives the product at the right place, and right time. The purpose of the research study is to discuss about the new large thermal coal mine. The research will focus on the key challenges that the mine faces in terms of the logistics and the preparation of the report is made to discuss about the challenges of the logistics company and the complexities In the 21st century, logistics has been widely used in transferring the technical know-how other innovations which are being developed in some other countries and are transferred over huge distances. The logistics specialist is person involves in planning and executing the cumbersome journey of huge machines being delivered thousands of mile away from their point of origin. The following the few basics of Logistics movement:- Reliable Vendor to choose with effective transportation mechanism. Selecting the precise route of movement which ensures hassle free delivery. Mode of deliver method should be effective. Collaborating with Transnational department with maximum support of software IT resources. Being a mining company which requires Six Caterpillar CAT 8200 dragline excavators to be moved to assembly site of Alpha, Queensland is a big challenge. Draglines are basically used in surface mining and weigh between 2000 to 13000 metric tonnes. Therefore challenges in relation to its transportation to the actual site cannot be undermined (Heavyequipment, n.d). Draglines are basically used to reduce the burden on the coal mines that have higher life. The overburden is reduced and the cost per tonne is also lower when the draglines are used. However, it is critical to note that building a dragline is a time consuming process while clients keep looking for viable options during the period. Relocation of draglines is one of the viable options that clients in mining industry have. Relocation is however easier said than done. This requires a comprehensive planning and strategizing so that the draglines are moved effectively. To move it via road it requires use of interconnected trailers. These trailers are mostly self propelled, and are remote controlled by operator. There are also other options that are used to transfer the draglines from one place to another. The logistics in the particular research is from the Point of Origin, which is US to the Final Destination, which is the Alpha region in Central Western Queensland. Therefore the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1991 becomes applicable in the case. LOGISTICS INVOLVED IN TRANSFERING THE DRAGLINERS Mining industry has become a thrust area where logistics management works efficiently to deliver mega machines involved in various process of mining. The process of transporting the Draglines from the U.S. to Australia involves an operation choosing the best transportation vendor effective route to ensure the timely delivery of goods to the workplace. Preliminary logistics inventory involved in transferring the Draglines requires following are some basic aspects:- Cost Reduction The selection of transporting the Dragline manufactured by the CATTERPILLAR involves minimizing the cost associated with transporting the heavy machines all the way from U.S. to point of destination. The transportation will involve a mix of Roadways and waterways, with a prime focus on which waterway route should be used to minimize the time delay and cost associated with it. Capital Reduction This step involves the direct shipment of goods to the point of destination, thus minimizing the storage of goods at a certain warehouse. The in-bound inventory should as prepared which reduces the capital load on logistics movement, moreover if warehousing to be done, public warehouse should be opted in place of private. The overall logistics movement which is to be followed by a detailed report covering the following 3 heads of Strategic, Planning Operations involves the answers to the following subheads. Figure 1Logistics Movement Know-How MAJOR CHALLENGES IN TRANSPORTING DRAGLINE The following operations requires a holistic approach which involves cost trade-offs in order to ensure the timely delivery of the goods to the workplace. These challenges requires a collaboration multi-tasking of various transnational organisations as well as American Australian port authorities, the rules and regulations involved with transporting by waterway, etc. An initial inventory done by the logistics department is as follows:- Processing: - This is the first step of any logistics movement, involves packaging of the Dragline as a whole or parts by parts. This is done at the manufacturer end responsible for the delivery of goods by Shipment. Transportation: - This step is the most crucial among all as it involves the transportation of heavy duty dragline by shipping them in large containers. Once the goods are processed and packaged, the size and capacity of containers used for shipment is decided based upon the decision made by the manufacturer considering the clear width, clear height clear length of Drag line. Following Containers can be used based upon the suitability with the manufacturers model of purchase:- Open Top Container: It comes with a convertible top, to be used for material of any height. Cargo Storage Roll Tanker: - If the Dragline is coming in assembly of parts, this container offers special set of containers used primarily for assembly of parts to be further transported to site. Special Purpose Containers: - they are the ones best suited for the job, made with custom sizes, and are appropriate to handle a large volume of Dragline. Figure 2 Various Types of Containers Source: Logistics Transport Engineering Sea Freight: - Based upon the selection of above listed containers to be used for shipment, the cost of shipment as well as the provision of warehousing is to be finalized. The world Baggage Packages Basic shipment route can be followed through the Atlantic Ocean, till the port of Alpha. Warehouse: - The storage of shipment at major ports is an additional requirement. Sometimes, due to bad weather, the cargo has to be unloaded from ship, to be stored into warehouse, can be an additional cost factor which is to be minimized. Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services (AQIS) requirements: - This is the special set of laws framed up by the Australian government in order to protect the environment of the country which is unique in many ways. Currently AQIS is run by Department of Agriculture, responsible for the inspection of pests, goods and human against any disease or virus alien to the environment. In fact, Australia has the strictest Quarantine laws than any were in the world. There are set of Australias Quarantine Standards which requires clearance from port authorities, the set of rules given under, Quarantine Proclamation 1998, Part 2 has to follow. The laws govern the entry into the port, Landing, and quarantine stations. The AQIS recommends taking use of services offered by custom brokers in order to ease the legal process. The eyesight is a fundamental sense in our bodies. It enables us do everything. Without sight, most of the things would be difficult to do and some would be impossible. For example, it would not be possible to drive or fly an aircraft. When I watch the blind people, I notice they always struggle to do some activities. For example, when they are reading, they have to use special books. Many books are written and printed normally. However, blind students find it almost impossible to find resources that are printed in Braille as these are quite inaccessible. Vision should not be taken for granted and it is not guaranteed. Those with sight should take care of their eyes and sight. They should eat healthy foods rich in nutrients for eyes and sight. It is our responsibility to help blind people in the society. We could help by donating fundamental facilities for them in their learning institutions. It is also important to help them in any other possible way. For example, helping them to walk across the road or anything else they need. Blind people are part of the society and they should not be set apart from other members of the community. When carrying out the vision experiment, I noticed a few things. Immediately I was blindfolded, I felt confused fro the first few moments. Seeing darkness made me feel uneasy and completely different. It made me realize light is also an important element of sight and it enables us to see clearly. Regardless of having vision, it is not possible to see without light. Lack of sight triggers sad or other negative emotions. When I was blindfolded, I felt sad since I was incapable of doing my usual activities. Sometimes blind people feel disappointed by the community’s attitude towards them. They argue that people see them as inferior since they are disabled. Other individuals offer them mere pity as opposed to opportunities for which they are capable. Individuals and the society have effect to the rest of the world. This mostly applies to people with disabilities. A good number of them feel alienated because of various reasons. For instance, there are inadequate public facilities for them. The society has the duty to accept them and assist them in every possible way. For example, organizing charity would help in supporting the welfare of the disabled. A society is a small unit globally and it can influence other societies in the world. Creating awareness ensures all the communities on a global scale are conversant with the issues. Disabled people have a role in our society and they are not given enough attention. Some of them have great potential in many areas but they cannot exploit them. This happens because there are barriers. In many countries, there is a perception that disabled people are not capable. It is rare to get a leader with any major disability like vision. It becomes depressing for them since they feel the urge to exploit their potential (Powell, 89) . It is encouraging to see how the society and the world at large have supported disabled people. There are a good number of learning institutions in many countries. They help these people to become independent and fit in the community. For instance, Occasionally, Paralympics take place. Disable people from all over the world have a chance of participating. This is another way of how the society is effective globally. Diverse people meet and interact with each other. It is a good feeling when these people meet and share experiences. Such sports support disabled people financially. The participants are compensated attractively and this uplifts their living standards. Societies and communities should continue to support disabled people because they are part of the community. Some of them are relatives and close friends. We cannot just ignore them and watch them suffer. This will enable me to know more about my behavior, and to understand how this affects the people around me. This topic is important to me because, I need to understand myself better in order to become more successful. I need to identify my strengths and enhance them, and I need to identify my personality style, which may act as a hindrance to my success. I have worked in a team before, and I am aware that some of characteristics may not auger well with other people. The paper will begin by conducting a self-assessment, followed by the measures that I need to take in the coming months to ensure that I have a deeper understanding of myself and of the relationships that I have with other people. I will conclude the paper by noting how this assessment will affect me in future. Areas of possible improvement Some of the group members of different teams do not like the fact that I criticize them often, especially if they do not follow instructions. On the other hand, I also do not like being criticized because this means that I am not perfect at the work am doing. Sometimes I am moody, and this discourages people from consulting me on different issues. I would like to change this behavior so that I can be a better team player and help other members in completing our projects quickly. Self-Assessment I have identified myself as a number 4 and 7 based on the Enneagram. My leadership paradigm as a number 4 is to ensure that people find a meaning and purpose for working in the organization. I identify myself as a number 4 because I am intuitive, introspective, and creative. I inspire people and I am compassionate towards them. I can be withdrawn and moody, and I can be deeply critical of others, in my search for excellence. My leadership paradigm as a number 7 is to get people excited and create innovative ventures, thus ensuring that the organization takes advantage of any new activities. This involves being curious and enthusiastic, while at the same time being imaginative and a quick thinker. I can sometimes be impulsive and rebellious, and I am unfocused because I often like to multitask. I avoid routine and painful situations. I work with different people in the workplace, and some of our projects involve us working in groups. I work well with my team because I come up with solutions very easily. I look at things differently, and I am able to come up with creative and imaginative ideas. I motivate and inspire people to complete the project and ensure that we have completed the projects and fulfilled all the objects that we had set. Action Learning In the next six to eight months, I will take several steps to ensure that I enhance my interrelationships with other people. We are often assigned many projects at work, which involves us working in teams. I will involve myself in a project where all the team members will be of the same level and have the same contribution. No one in the team will be more superior, and all the members will contribute equally. I hope that by the end of the project, I will have learnt how to listen to other people’s opinions and I will have learnt how to take their advice. Since all the members have an equal say in everything, the members will be free to criticize each other. Conclusion I have identified myself as an intuitive and creative person who likes motivating people and inspiring them in challenging situations. The personality styles that I have chosen are a reflection of who I am. They have identified my different personality strengths. By highlighting my areas of weakness, they have enabled me to know the areas I can improve to enhance my relationship with other people. I have already identified a way that I can do this, and I believe that working with people with the same capacity as I am, or with people who are more superior than I am will enable me to learn how to handle constructive criticism and become a better person. I believe that the enhanced knowledge of self-awareness will help me in my professional career. I will be able to work well with people and I will improve my leadership skills to ensure that I become an effective project manager.

Big Tobacco Sues Feds over Graphic Warnings on Cigarette Labels Research Paper

Big Tobacco Sues Feds over Graphic Warnings on Cigarette Labels - Research Paper Example Congress, 2009). Till 1996, the FDA has no vital role to play as far as the regulation of tobacco products is concerned. It was then controlled through an array of state and congressional legislation. In most of the US States, statues deal with the issue of selling the tobacco products to minors and licensing for its distributions to retailers. In the year 1950, all states had put the ban on sale of tobacco products to minors at that time purchase age varied from state to state (U.S. Congress, 2009). The law in vogue impressed upon the large size tobacco manufacturing companies to disclose publically all the ingredients used in the cigarette manufacturing process. It should also highlight the poisonous contents used in it. The company should refrain from using the mild words just as light or ultra light to dispel the impression of its harm on human body. The bill in force makes the cigarette manufacturers accountable on wooing the adults and children to become addiction of smoking (U .S. Congress, 2009). In the eyes of critics, the promulgated act is effectuate in the sense that it can reduce the nicotine level in the cigarette to some extend rather than wipe it out completely. The affordable level of nicotine may encourage smokers to smoke more. Market restrictions definitely put the hurdles to find out the smoking alternatives to smoke cigarette. In FDA v Brown & Williamson case, the Supreme Court of United States of America held that since the congress had not delegated the authority to FDA to control the damages arising out of the use of tobacco products, therefore to fill the gap and to ensure effective control, Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act came into being. Secondly the former American Administration over acted the delegated power of congress in this respect. As per the Senate bill, health-warning label should cover fifty percent of front and back portions of the package. The word warning thereon should be in capital letter. The number of opposition members in the Senate largely hailing from tobacco cultivating states, supported the ongoing move to discourage the smoking in spite of the facts that they have deep roots in the tobacco industry. In the larger national interest they are ready to afford the financial losses to keep away their children and adults from the bad habits of smoking (Gifford, 2010). In order to have an effective control over the damages of human health they have suggested the following measures to be implemented (U.S. Congress, 2009): 1. FDA should have tobacco control centers at its disposal to regulate the substance, marketing and sale of tobacco products. 2. Importers and tobacco companies should reveal the ingredients of their existing products and get approval from FDA. Approval for any new tobacco product should also be sought from the same authority. 3. FDA should have the authority to change the tobacco substance in any product to lessen could be damages on the body of its users. 4. I t should shun the application of sugar coated definition cigarette, which is contrary to section 3(1) of the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act (Connolly, 2004). New rules are to be introduced to prevent sales through direct channel or to conduct between retailer and consumer in order to curb the eye catching advertising campaign,

Media Sex and Violence - Past and Present Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Media Sex and Violence - Past and Present - Essay Example They are interested in shows that satisfy their aggressive nature and thus they turn toward believing violent reports subconsciously. While defining his media theory, Sparks (2009, p.3) asserts that â€Å"Perhaps the effects of media violence are difficult for people to detect in themselves- even though the effects are definitely present.† Negative effects of sex and violence on children Parents and teachers have always been concerned and looking for answers regarding what effects violence and sex in media can imprint on young developing brains. As technology media grows significantly and presents newer and smarter media types, the American youth is the first to get affected thanks to increased availability and affordability of media sources. When the television shows violent programs, then it is to be blamed in mutating the minds of the youngsters from incorruptibility to violence. Violent media arrives with concerns relating to addiction, anxiety, dejection, brutality and ag gression that develop in young minds. Last decade has shown an increase in violence rate among children in the United States and studies show that children are increasingly being treated for anger management thanks to the violent shows and programs shown on television. Children tend to have less-developed ability of decision-making or critical thinking so they cannot realize what is wrong with what they are viewing and their minds learn or absorb every act they see. When a child watches the violent or sexual acts, the energy generated by the fantasy keeps the physical responses from getting expressed. So, when this energy gets its chance, it gets expressed in the real life. Moreover, girls are experiencing very early menstruation and boys are entering into adolescence very early because of being exposed to the bold television shows which hastens their puberty. â€Å"Several longitudinal studies have linked exposure to sex in the media to earlier onset of sexual intercourse†, says Wood (2009). Negative effects of sex and violence on adults â€Å"Research on violent television and ?lms, video games, and music reveals unequivocal evidence that media violence increases the likelihood of aggressive and violent behavior in both immediate and long-term contexts†, assert Anderson et al. (2003, p.81). They further state that violence shown in media is responsible for the development of aggressive behavior and thoughts among the adults (Sics, 2011; Boxer et al., 2009). This can also result in abuse in relationships. Desensitization regarding violence and sex occurs. The physiological arousal that results from sexual content shown by media tends to initiate frustration which then comes out in the form of spouse abuse, rape, homicides, and sexual activities. Research suggests that today, the number of adults watching violent and sexual media through different media sources are increasing day by day and it is frustrating to guess where it will end up. Recomme ndations Media literacy is necessary, both in the adults and the children. In case of children, it is important for the parents to work out some parental mediation interventions so that the children’

Parents are seldom concerned about teenagers to engage in academic activities like sport and reading, as these are the activities seen as healthy social behaviors. The reasons why teenagers playing online games There are some basic reasons why teenagers easy to get attracted by online games. First is the price of games, games are cheap and even free for download through online space. Second reason is the competitive behavior, most gamer will spend so many time to hit the games result and also compete with the others gamers through online, they play non-stop to complete the mission on game to get digital reward like new weapon. We all like to be superior at something. For a teen who isnt necessarily a brilliant student, he/she may be ranked in the top 5 in worldwide for Tetris Battle. The sense of subjugating digital competitor is self-satisfying and isnt too difficult once teenagers has played a game for long time. Maintaining the position of rank in the online games become a serious business, and they putting effort in the hours as a way to achieve it (Hartney, 2011). What is addiction? Addiction has long been understood as a person unable to control one habit, alcohol or drug use (Hartney, 2011). This is because of the physical effects of these substances on the body, especially the brain, people often think that real addiction only occur when people often use these substances(Robinson Berridge, 2003). People also can develop addictive behavior, such as online gaming, even quite ordinary and necessary activities, such as exercise and diet (Charlton Danforth, 2007). The gaming addict stops interacting and participating that the real-life relationships, gamers only spend time on playing games (Kolo and Baur, 2004). Games addiction strain relationships with family. According to the study by Brigham Young University, undergrad Jensen Walker (2009), was based on the information from 813 college students, the more time students spent playing video games, the worse their relationships with parents and friends. The examples of changes boys and girls go through the puberty like become aggressive, sexual maturity and psychological changes. This process may happen in different age and time. According to National geographic (2011), teenager like to act different, they are aspire to become adult and always involve in complex behaviors like smoking, sex before married, gambling and also online gaming. Teenager are the part of the social group, the way they behave does not necessarily have to be negative. But most of the time teenagers refer to socially undesirable behaviors, such as over gaming, rather than socially desirable behaviors, like reading. Although it could be applied to either and either could be a positive or a negative experience for the individual. Teenager need to face the problem of Peer pressure, they are e asy to get influence and vulnerable to the peer pressure. This is due to the stage of changing when they spend less time with their parent and start to become more independent. They are not yet ready in understanding their own understanding about the relationships with others or the consequences of their behavior, this is because they are under mature. This will cause them to involve in behaviors that maybe wrong and unethical (Hartney, 2011). Parents According to Oxford Dictionaries.com (2012), parent refer to a persons father and mother and the person who give birth and raise a children. Parents always worry and concern to their children, especially the children facing the development stage in the aged between 13 years old to 19 years old (UrbanDictionary, 2012). Parents are seldom concerned about teenagers to engage in academic activities like sport and reading, as these are the activities seen as healthy social behaviors. In parents perspective, addiction is a complex process, which is caused by many different factors. Teenagers always have been worries to engage in the potentially addictive activities, such as online gaming, gambling, drug use, sexual behavior and also other unethical activities (Ledwith, 2012). According to a study by Sneed and Runco (1992), parents are not all oppose to the gaming habit of their children, for them, gaming is not just about negative effects. By playing online, their children can train their eyes-hand coordination, killtime and be familiar to the use of computer, but it also included some negative effect like the risk of taking potentially aggressive behavior, waste money to buy gaming products and also increase of the competitive values. For sure, parent also worry about their relationship with children will become drift apart. Even the side effect of gaming is very terrible, parents still willing to buy them the gaming devices, such as computer, PSP, smart phone and other devices that can play game and access to internet. They provide the opportunities for their children to access and play games, but they hope children can use it wisely (Berthelsen, 2009). According to McGillicuddy-DeLisi (1985), parents behavior is the example to their children. Inside the family context, gaming can be happened not only on children or teenager, but also parents. Parents might also play online games before and continued their gaming life after married. Some parents playing online game s mostly believe that gaming can help children to learn about the usage of computer, so they allow their children to play online games. Goodnow and Collins (1990) also argued that parents knowledge and beliefs should improve on understanding of parental actions. These beliefs and knowledge can be the use of computer to progress online gaming. The reasons why teenagers playing online games There are some basic reasons why teenagers easy to get attracted by online games. First is the price of games, games are cheap and even free for download through online space. For example, teenagers buy the top up card for only RM10 from 7-eleven to update their gaming tools on facebook games called Boomz. Maintaining the position of rank in the online games become a serious business, and they putting effort in the hours as a way to achieve it (Hartney , 2011). To extent and level up their games point, teenager become more and more aggressive to achieve target on gaming, example finish all level of Angry Birds to save the eggs. Third reason is the peer influence, teenagers follow what the friends do and act the way that they like (Steinberg, 2011). Since everyone playing online games, teenagers hate to become isolated and they tend to follow the trend, they enjoy playing online games and sharing the experience among their friends. Next reason is because to make new friends through online gaming, online games mostly have many players and they might not know each other at first, they can chat and share experience, it becomes a social contact in online space, these reasons may become the cause of game addiction (Horan, 2010). Teenagers playing games through online in order to manage feeling of depress like loneliness and anxiety (Saisan Smith, 2012). When faced stress and have a bad day, we will find our ways to escape from the problems and s eek for something fun to release stress, for example like gaming. Effects of online gaming According to CRC Health Group Educational Website (2011), there is several effect of online gaming usually occurring on teenagers. Spend too much time on gaming and having problem to complete their home task and also home work. Teenager have problem to manage their time wisely when playing games, they can play nonstop, hours per hours just to achieve the digital reward of online games, this become a problem to them because they cannot complete their task in real life and even concentrate on study at school. According to Yong(2009), teenagers who playing video games oftenly will have trouble like falling and losing grades at school. This is because homework becomes less of important and priority to them, they only care about the ranking of online games and also the world of cyber space. They also become more and more aggressive because of the competition on online games. Online gaming will also cause the negligence to consume foods and beverage, for example, they seldom to take food a nd even drink; they have some physical symptoms like dry eyes, headache or backache and also sleep disturbances isolation. Besides, they become reluctance to communicate with friends and family after school, and lack of communication skill to associate with people in real life. This will gradually affects their relation with parents. Game Addiciton Addiction has long been understood as a person unable to control one habit, alcohol or drug use (Hartney, 2011). According to Hartney (2011), game addiction is a form of computer addiction or internet addiction. Game addiction often happen on teenagers, over 70% of children aged between 13 and 19 years old play games once in awhile , while 40% of adolescents play an online multiplayer game (Van Rooij Van den Eijnden, 2007). Online gaming allows teenagers to behave very differently from their real life, like a shy child can suddenly became active; a passive child can become aggressive (CRC, 2011). According to re search from University of Southern California, the growing popularity of online video games, it will increase the risk of game addiction. The popular games such as World of Warcraft, the massive multi-online role playing games attract gamers to behave in different role in real life if gamers spending in excess of 40 to 50 hours per week playing games, this allow the happen of game addiction (Yong,2009). Gaming affects family relations MMORP is the game with virtual social environment created by multiple gamers. A study conducted by the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University in UK has examined the social interactions that occur both within and outside of MMORPs (Cole and Griffiths, 2007). The study showed MMORPs can be extremely social games, with the high percentages of gamers making life-long friends and partners. The gaming addict stops interacting and participating that the real-life relationships, gamers only spend time on playing games (Kolo and Baur, 2004). The behavior of gaming will strain relationships with family. According to the study by Brigham Young University, undergrad Jensen Walker (2009), was based on the information from 813 college students, the more time students spent playing video games, the worse their relationships with parents and friends. This is because the gamers have problems making social connection after spending too much time on online gaming. Some teenagers lying or hiding gaming use to family, they lie to family about what they are really doing on computer, and usually tell them that they are using the computer for work and study (Yong, 2009). Teenagers misuse money in order to spend in game-related items, some of them steal money from family members, and they lie to their family, all to find more time to play the game, this make their relationships with family worst. Teenagers spend more time in front of computer becomes withdrawn from their family and the quality of relation between families members drift apart. Walker said relationship quality is one of a cluster of things that we found to be modestly associated with video games. For most of the teenager, the important way to overcome the addiction on game is to find alternate way to overcome these difficult of feelings, it is very important to take serious on finding ways to reduce stressful situations.

The Red Badge of Courage Essay -- English Literature Essays

The Red Badge of Courage The Red Badge of Courage, by Steven Crane, has been considered one of the greatest war novels of all time. It is a story that realistically depicts the American Civil War through the eyes of Henry Fleming, an ordinary farm boy who decides to become a soldier. Henry is very determined to become a hero, and the story tells Henrys voyage from being a young coward to becoming a brave man. This voyage is the classic trip from innocence to experience. To begin, the story starts out with a huge debate between the soldiers. One boy had heard a rumor that the regiment would be moving on to fight a battle the next day. Some of the soldiers agree with this boy. Others think that their regiment will never go into a real battle. While watching this argument, Henry, the protagonist, decides that he would rather go lay down and think rather then take part in the heated argument between the soldiers. Henry, a simple farm boy, is rather excited when he hears the rumor that they will be fighting soon. It had always been a dream of his to fight in a war, and become a hero. Now his dream was coming true. Henry begins to think about what life was like before he entered the army, and remembers some stories of war he has heard from old veterans. This flashback is very effective in showing how his previous experiences have affected his thoughts on war now. It is very clear that he is afraid that he will not be able to withstand the pressures of a war. He keeps telling himself that if he wants to become a hero and realizes he can not run away. He must stick out the battle with the rest of his fellow soldiers. While marching along, Henry sees the first corpse he has ever seen. He shows sorry for the m an because the dead man had died in such poor conditions. The souls of his shoes were worn bare. When Henry sees the corpse, he begins to wonder if his generals actually know what they are doing. He thinks that the generals are leading him right into a trap and right into the middle of the enemy, the rebels. Henry deals with his fear of battle by acting calm and confident. He acts as if he has been in a thousand battles, and complains about the walking. It shows one of Henry’s defense mechanisms and how he can use his arrogance to hide his innocence. Regiment 304 moves on to battle the next day. Henry is getting very scared, but is too ... ...hey are going to be fighting is going to be very tough, and the general is looking for spare regiment. The leader feels that there is no way Regiment 304 will survive the battle alone, and calls the soldiers ‘mule drivers’, thinking that they are slow, and rather stupid. When Henry and Tom hear this, they are very upset. They are determined to fight as hard as they can, and with all their heart and souls. Henry and Tom prove themselves well in the battle. They steal the confederate flag, and are both brave enough to go out on the field without weapons. After the regiment retreats, the general recognizes both soldiers as extremely brave, and comment that they are fit to be generals themselves. This final action is what finalizes the movement from innocence to experience for Henry and Tom. They went into the war as little boys, and now they are moving on as men. They have both earned their red badges of courage, as well as the hero status they had dreamed of obtaining forever. In conclusion, The Red Badge of Courage is a great novel and I hope you will take the time to read it. But, if The Red Badge of Courage is not for you, Steven Crane has many more great novels

Discuss the role of defense attorney’s in the courtroom workgroup. A defense attorney is a lawyer who provides legal representation for a person who has been arrested and charged for breaking the law or when an individual been served with a lawsuit. For example, when another individual filing the lawsuit goes after money for damages or justifiable relief of some sort. A very small portion of lawyers actually discuss that they work as criminal defense attorneys. This is because of the negative labeling assigned to the profession by American Social Forces. However defense attorneys are very important in the criminal justice system. They work to protect the innocent from being falsely convicted, and they work to protect the constitutional rights of all defendants. When a criminal defendant cannot afford to pay for the services of a private legal attorney, the United States Supreme Court requires that a defense attorney be appointed to represent the defendant. This expense is covered by taxpayers. There are three major categories of defense attorneys to help assist criminal defendants: * Private attorneys usually referred to as retained counsel.

Jules de Gautier stated, â€Å"Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.† I think the â€Å"war against reality† is the process of aging and imagination is the human process of being naive that shields us from the frightening world.
